Speak Blessings

Words can parch like the blazing sun or refresh like succulent fruit. Choose them wisely for they are known to create lasting memories. Are they kind and uplifting or are they condemning and hurtful. Which words are you choosing?

You can use your words to breathe life into another person or you can use our words to rip the life right out of them. The choice is yours. Begin to listen to yourself and make necessary changes so that your words are seasoned with love and kindness.

Nothing is more appealing than speaking beautiful, life-giving words. For they release sweetness to our souls and inner healing to our spirits. Proverbs 16:24

Your Words Bring Life!

The enemy wants to steal your voice – (spiritually and physically) the enemy wins because God’s own people do not realize the power that comes from identity in Jesus. God’s word stirs the heart of compassion into action. Remember God’s word through you brings healing, freedom, and life!

Chorus from “Your Words” by Third Day

Your Words Bring Life, Your words give us life that’s never ending, your words bring us a love that never fails, everything else will fade away but what will remain Are your words. Let us speak your words more than ours, more than ever Let us share your love with all the world.

The grass will wither, and the flowers will fall but the word of our God will last forever.  Isaiah 40:7-8

Isaiah’s Daughter: A Novel of Prophets and Kings by Mesu Andrews

Songs are written of sons, but daughters are left to whispers.

So gather near, friend, to hear of a daughter beyond imagining. She had the heart of a lion. Braver than a soldier. Wiser than a king. She was queen in Judah long after King David’s bones had turned to dust. Long after the arrogance of Solomon’s son split Israel into two nations.

In this epic Biblical narrative, ideal for fans of The Bible miniseries, a young woman taken into the prophet Isaiah’s household rises to capture the heart of the future king.

Isaiah adopts Ishma, giving her a new name; Zibah, the delight of the Lord, thereby ensuring her royal pedigree. Ishma came to the prophet’s home, devastated after watching her family destroyed and living as a captive. But as the years pass, Zibah’s lively spirit wins Prince Hezekiah’s favor, a boy determined to rebuild the kingdom his father has nearly destroyed. But loving this man will awake in her all the fears and pain of her past and she must turn to the only One who can give life, calm her fears, and deliver a nation.

“Danger, dark schemes, and political intrigue wrestle against the truth, valor, and determined obedience to Yahweh in this compelling tale of Hezekiah—the boy who would be king—and a beautiful but broken orphan girl taken in by Isaiah, the Lord’s prophet.

Andrews has woven a love story, a beautifully written novel to savor, and a reminder that despite our fallen humanity, God’s best is yet to come.

Mesu Andrews brings the prophet Isaiah to life with her usual brilliance at weaving deep historical threads together with the story of a little-known woman of the Bible. Isaiah’s Daughter is an excellent reminder that the truth of God’s words will be proven, even when His people cannot see through the veil of suffering to the ultimate victory.

Epic drama, adventure, love, treachery; Isaiah’s Daughter is all of that and more in this latest stellar novel by Mesu Andrews. The author brings to life Judah’s queen, the lovely Hephzibah, infusing each page with heart-stopping emotion and a pure romantic love for her friend and king,

If you haven’t tried biblical/historical fiction before, give this book a try.

I received a copy of the book from Blogging for Books and the Crown Publishing Group for my review.

New Year Blessing

What a way to start a New Year – The coldest it has been for New Year’s day in San Antonio in a long time – I hope that you have a new hope for the coming year. One filled with promise, in the scripture God himself says that there is a future planned just for you, one filled with hope for a good future. If you focus on the Lord and expectantly watch and listen I believe you will find him and you will be astonished by what will happen even in this coming year; for you personally and for those around us and the nations. Jeremiah 29:11-14

One way to expectantly wait is to declare blessings over yourself and others. One way to begin is:
Pick a bible verse in your favorite version or try one from one that you are not familiar with (it might give you a different understanding of the verse) & change it into a declaration for your life, use one of the examples or ask God to give you one just for you and expect it to change your heart

  1. Declare it out loud several times during the day… when it gets into your heart in a few weeks, months or take the entire year, then…
  2. Start blessings others with it (or begin by blessings others with and see how God reveals himself to you and those that you bless)
  3. Then pick another verse and begin again

Some examples: make it short enough to memorize and powerful enough to make an impact.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Ephesians 6:11
I declare I am clothed in and protected by God’s supernatural armor so I can outwit and outlast the enemy’s strategies.

“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Luke 1:45 (one of my favorites)
Today I declare that I am blessed because I believe God will fulfill His promises to me.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1
I declare that I have faith that turns my deepest longings into reality. Therefore, what I am longing for is already mine.

Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible. But with God all things are possible.”
I declare that I will see God do the impossible in my situation

Proverb10:22 The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow to it.
I declare that all my needs are met, and I will be filled with joy!

Because you are close to me and always available my confidence will never be shaken, for I experience your wrap-around presence every moment. Psalms16:8.
I declare today will be a good day and that I walk with a confidence that will not be shaken because of the ever presence of God surrounding me.

When His lamp shone upon my head, and when by His light I walked through darkness; Job 29:3
I declare I will walk through the darkness because His glory shines on me and lights the way.

Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
I declare that the God of inspiration is a fountain of hope and fills me with uncontainable joy and perfect peace as I trust in him.

Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,
I declare that the Father of glory gives me the spirit of wisdom and revelation to know him better.

Psalms 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Today I declare as I make God my utmost delight and pleasure of my life, he will provide for me what I desire most.
Your situation may not be what you would like them to be at the beginning of this new year. Remember it is aligning ourselves spirit, soul, and body to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to see the sun rise over our mountains. Jesus promises to fill you with joy as your gratitude flourishes. Begin to nourish your heart with reminders of Jesus’ promises and thank Him.

This should be our example as Pasty Clairmont says “I’d like to express my gratitude to the Lord not only verbally, but by asking Him how to richly love on His people in word and deed.” Below is a New Year Blessing from Pasty Clairmont and wanted to share with you as it expresses my sentiments for you dear readers:

A New Year Blessing

May the year ahead find you flourishing because
you are growing in your expressions of love.
May your mind be stirred by God’s counsel
and your will be quickened. May you sing your new song
in such a manner that others find hope in
your continued transformation.
May the peace in your pace be palpable
that others might join you in the still waters of His grace.
May your words be measured and kind.
And may you find fresh reserves in Christ’s presence.

Blind Spot (Chesapeake Valor) by Dani Pettry

FBI agent Declan Grey is in the chase of his life–but isn’t sure exactly what he’s chasing after. Threatened by a terrorist that “the wrath is coming,” Grey fears something horrible is about to be unleashed on American soil. When his investigation leads him to a closed immigrant community, he turns to Tanner Shaw to help him. She’s sought justice for refugees and the hurting around the world, and if there’s anyone who can help him, it’s Tanner.

Tanner Shaw has joined the FBI as a crisis counselor . . . meaning she now has more opportunity to butt heads with Declan. But that tension also includes a spark she can’t deny, and she’s pretty sure Declan feels the same. But before anything can develop between them, they discover evidence of a terror cell–and soon are in a race against the clock to stop the coming “wrath” that could cost thousands their lives.

This book was intense, faith-filled, action-packed suspense filled with a wonderful romance woven through an incredibly difficult to put down.

The suspense and the action never stopped. Even at the end, there was a wonderful cliffhanger, making it difficult to wait for the next installment of this series. The premise of this book is completely relevant in today’s headlines. Dealing with terrorists and drugs has become the norm now and the ease with which these “villains” were able to bring these into our country is terrifying. I’m just thankful there are wonderful people out there protecting us, as these detectives do is this series.

This novel introduces a new mystery of an apparent murder-suicide involving a close friend and mentor of the group. But the on-going investigation of human trafficking and terrorism was what really captured my attention. The focus is on Declan and Tanner’s story, but fans of this series will be glad to hear that a loose thread that has been tangled up in each book is finally revealed. Is everything resolved? No, but that’s a plus because that means another book by Pettrey!

I really loved this book and cannot wait for the next book to come out. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good mystery with a little romance. Faith is an important part of their lives, and Blind Spot weaves the two main characters’ faith seamlessly into their lives — both the mundane and the out-of-the-ordinary aspects. There are several stories going on at the same time, so it keeps you on your toes following the characters. If you haven’t read the books in this series, you are missing out on stories that could be taken from today’s headlines.

I received an eBook from Net Galley and Bethany House for my review

A Crazy, Holy Grace: The Healing Power of Pain and Memory by Frederick Buechner

When pain is real, why is God silent?

A Crazy, Holy Grace is a collection of essays on Buechner’s meditations on pain and loss. Buechner covers such topics as, the power of hidden secrets, loss of a dearly beloved, letting go, resurrection from the ruins, peace, and listening for the quiet voice of God. He reveals that pain and sorrow can be a treasure—an amazing grace.

Buechner says that loss will come to all of us, but he writes that we are not alone. Crazy and unreal as it may sometimes seem, God’s holy, healing grace is always present and available if we are still enough to receive it.

In this essential collection of essays, including one never before published, Frederick Buechner finds that the God, whom might seem so silent, is ever near. He writes about what it means to be a steward of our pain; about this grace from God that seems arbitrary and yet draws us to his holiness and care. He writes about the magic of memory and how it can close up the old wounds with the memories of past goodnesses and graces from God.

The reader gets the sense of having the privilege of reading the journal of a close friend as the author shares his journey through grief with complete transparency. This is a book you can read, put down, and pick back up without losing your place. However, it’s also a book that may compel you to read it in “tiny bites” as you walk with Buechner down the road of sorrow.

A very fine examination of pain and loss and how it may bring us to know ourselves and to God. Those of you who have Buechner’s other works will not find much that is new, but it is a good compilation to reflect on one’s pain and loss. It is an excellent book to do a group study as we all have dealt with pain and loss.

This is short easy to read and a starting point for you to get honest about your own pain, your own memories, and your own pathway to healing. A Crazy Holy Grace flows in short anecdotal accounts of things that matter in his life. You can read it as a devotional, as a collection of stories, or as a collection of theological essays. And let’s be honest: we all struggle with pain. And further honesty means we have to admit that we all have those memories. But pain and memories don’t have to define us. In the midst of darkness, we can still find hope and healing thanks to that “crazy, holy, grace”. Buechner shows us that there is a path up, and remembering the past is often a good way to get started on that path.

I received the eBook from Net Galley and Zondervan publishing for my review.
